The best thing is you got rid of that planned economy you've been suffering under and you now let your intelligent educated people make something of themselves.
The worst thing was letting your religious differences split you into 2 and now 3 countries (India,Pakistan, and Bangledesh, formerly East pakistan) you have many similarities and you permit a stupid thing like differing gods from making you all one great country. Gods can all take care of themselves.Humanity should take care of each other!

A. Best thing...becoming an independent country has been one of the best things for India despite all the war that goes on over territory and other issues, but just imagine an India still under the British Raj

India, despite many problems that existed before the end of the British raj, has been a reasonably stable democracy. That in of itself is reason to believe that independence has been a good thing for the country.

Best thing: successfully defending itself against incursions from China and would-be invasion from Pakistan.

Worst thing: maintaining a culture that values out-of-control population growth. The one thousand millionth citizen being celebrated should not have been a reason for large-scale celebration, given the per capita standard of living.

That's tough. I would have to say bad because before they were only economically oppressed. The Muslims and Hidus, however, were united and at peace. Now there is only bloodshed, but is India growing economically now, though, Pakistan and former east Pakistan aren't doing well at all. There is also a ton of fighting and persecution and bloodshed. I think its well to mention Ghandi who could get rid of the UK, but not stop the fighting between the Hindus and Muslims, meaning the fighting between the two was and is the bigger problem.

the best thing to happen to India is its independence, period. The worst thing...... probably buying nuclear material from my country(USA). Maybe it is the fact that there are only Christians, Muslims and Sikhs in the Indian government. India, being laregly Hindu should haven at least SOME Hindus in office.

The worst screw-up was the decision to turn semi-communist. The best was the opposite -- the opening of the markets and embracing the new globalized economy.

C. I have no idea. I wasn't there before it happened, and I haven't been there since, so I can't say if it is good or bad for India.
