when you say teen i assume you mean under 21 and if that's the case its pretty simple take the car away and if that doesn't work have their driving privileges suspended as a parent you have the power to do that
as for why they do it the most common reasons are the fact that they think its cool and social pressures from their friends push them to do things the wouldn't otherwise do
no i have never dank and drove its not Worth the risk to my life or any body Else's for that mater

Equip vehicles with breathalizer equipment straight form the factory as a necessary part of the vehicle, not an option. The teen must pass the test otherwise the vehicle is signaled via computer and the car does not start. Such a mechanism should be a mandatory requirement just as having road worthy cars is mandatory and in most areas, insurance coverage, and punishable by law if caught.
They do this out of a lot of things...peer pressure, a belief that they are fine and don't want to admit otherwise as this might be a sign of not being able to hold their alcohol. Don't have money or are too cheap to call a cab Perhaps have daddy's car and believe they need to get it home or suffer the consequences. Perhaps parents don't know they drink so this makes getting that car home all the more important to them, etc etc etc.
No I have never driven drunk, nor has my husband or any boyfriends I had. I had a cousin and a friend killed by drunk drivers, another cousin seriously crippled..so drinking and driving around me is not an option that is even entertained.

Lock them up for a very long time. That will work. It will scare the **** out of them. Make it as heavy as murder 1. Well maybe not to that extent, but you know what i'm getting at... I only drove drunk once, and I'm a excellent driver, and It was harder then sh*t
I drove drunk because I had to get home, there was going to be nobody that was going to drive me home, plus it was either drive home or sit outside until i sober up. Of course that would have been the logical choice, but not when your drunk..

I also think there should be a service for the people who are drinking to get home(not just teens), there should be no questions ask. The problems with this service would be getting your own vehicle back the next day. But at least there would be no drinking and driving. We don't even have a taxi in my town and the laws here are rough on driving under the influence.

I did a lot when I was younger. I am lucky I didn't kill myself or other people. My friends and I have talked about this a lot before. We all did it. We just thought we were invincible. We thought it could never happen to us as long as we were "smart" about it. It never did happen to us or anyone around us. Learning that invincibility is a myth comes with age. I don't think I could have learned any other way. I saw all of the gory videos and statistics on drunk driving...it didn't matter.

Strict discipline..When I first came home drunk at age 16 my dad ought have paddled my bare butt until I couldn't sit for a week. It took me a long time and a lot of loss before I eventually learned how drink is a curse...Get them in line while you can..paddle them and take away their keys and if none of that works have them arrested for DUI. Better be convicted of DUI than kill someone...maybe themselves.

Give them a way to get home for free. I have driven drunk and have had friends die in accidents, but we all had to get home mostly because the cops came and made everybody leave the party.
