My Dad-in-law went to MIT and he was a brainiac. Nowadays you need to be the top one or two percent in your graduating class, top-notch test scores, excellent extra-curricular activities, and a super essay. If you haven't got those, remember, MIT isn't the end all and be all of schools. Cal Tech has a fab reputation for decades now too, and many other schools of engineering!
