I am a high school senoir in Kansas and am thinking about going to Reed College near Portland, Oregon. It looks really cool online and in the mail they sent me, but of course you never know until you visit.
Since Oregon is really far away I am on unfamiliear ground. Do you know when the best time to visit would be? Is there any general information I should know? Do you think the university would be willing to drive me from the airport to their college? If anyone has any information about travelling alone, travelling to Oregon, or visiting a faraway college, it would be much appreciated.

Reed is a fantastic college. It is also highly selective, so your SATs better be great if you hope to be admitted.

Generally, when visiting a college, one contacts the office of admissions. They'll help you make arrangements, and may also allow you to room with a current student during your visit. Although summertime is the traditional time for visits, it is smart to visit during the school year so you can really get a feel for the campus. If you want to visit during the school year, make sure you don't time your visit during a break or holiday. The admissions office will apprise you of the dates of breaks.

Admissions officers generally do not pick up prospective students from the airport, but they will tell you what a cab costs, or tell you about an airport shuttle that goes to campus.

Best wishes to you, and I hope you get in!

I don't much about Oregon, but I can tell you that the best time to visit a campus is to go when school is in secession. Which makes things difficult when you're still in school yourself, but that's the best time to do it since you can talk to students and see how they like it as well as professors.

Try to go with your parents to visit schools if you can so they get an idea of what you're going through because its not only your decision but your parents have to feel comfortable about you going there. Spend a day per campus to get the feel of campus life. Some schools even offer overnight visits to potiential students so look into that.

Depending on the school depends on what they have to offer you when you get there, just call and try to arrange something. Hopefully after you've seen a few campuses you can judge whether or not its right for you or not. I know I visited probably five campuses before I chose one that I didn't even think of before. You'll know which one is the right one for you because you'll be like "this is it."

Hope this helps and good luck ;)

I've only visited schools that are about 6-7 hours from me so I don't know much about air traveling there but when it comes to advice about what to do on your visit, I made sure I brought along my digital camera so I could take pictures of the campus and stuff and then I can compare colleges like that, and not only by statistics. see if you can invision yourself there, and find places to eat or stores to visit, just to get the feel of what's around if you really want to go to that school. oh and ask a lot of questions and write down like admission requirements and things they'll tell you that they won't have on websites and stuff, it's very helpful.
good luck!

most schools will have someone pick you up and house you while you are there. Call the admitting office and ask. Remember colleges are businesses too and they want to make a good 1st impression. Travel alone if you can... it will be great practice for later... and you can get the real feel of college life. Good luck on your search!

Well so you are from the great state of Kansas.. First thing I would do is learn to spell. If you do not want to do that you may tell them your from Texas. They will understand.
