You have to insulate the whole garage especially between the inside roof rafters and down between the 2x4 wall studs. If you have a garage door opener you cannot put insulation on the door as it will jam up the opening... you have to replace the door with a factory built insulated garage door. Total insulation of your garage will not only keep out the heat but will also keep out the winter cold. If your ceiling and wall studs are exposed... insulation is not hard... but be sure to wear long sleeves and a face mask when you install the insulation so your skin and breathing is not exposed to the insulation fibers. I totally agree with the first answer except that I would go ahead and insulate the doors because without insulation, the metal just radiates heat into the garage like an oven.

Insulation won't help much... and if anything, may cause more problems.
You should vent the garage. The problem with garages is that they trap the heat inside... much like when you park your car with the windows rolled up... if you crack the windows, it's not that bad.
Look into having a vent or fan installed in the roof or front of your garage... it will make a world of difference.

I agree that venting will keep the garage cooler. If your garage door has windows you might also consider tinting or window wall paper to frost the windows and keep the sun out.
