First off, it's a kind of magic. From other answerers here I guess people have lost perspective on this. They take it for granted that a drawn image can be made to appear to move. Doesn't matter what the subject matter of an animation, the amazing part is the animation itself.
It also doesn't matter that the technology for it is over a century old, it's still amazing. Maybe even more so these days with the general level of scientific illiteracy being as low as it is.
Of course if you're talking classic animation, like Warner Bros. there's also the zaniness and irreverence factor. People love the sarcasm and death defying lunacy of Bugs and Daffy and the obstinate stupidity of villains like Wiley Coyote.
Also cartoons put people in a state of mind where they can listen to social criticism without realising that's what's happening. Consider the Simpsons. People love them, and they can get away with making political statements that no one else in television can make without fear of
political consequences. Where else on tv would the notion that nuke plants are staffed by donut
eating dolts even be allowed. You gotta love that...

Some people want to be transported back to the days of childhood when all they had to do was go to school and not worry about adult responsibilites. Cartoons take us back.
Also, they reflect society's issues/can be clever and witty.
They serve as a nice break from life's worries.

Perhaps it's because we all need a way to turn off reality sometimes. Plus, I like the bright colors and stupidity. :) It's nice to come home after a long day of school/work and watch some mindless nonsense that doesn't require us to think too hard.
