Not if its a job that will eventually pay off. I know some people with jobs that seriously just work until the end of their lives- they dont get retirement, insurance, anything. So depending on the job, its worth it but in some cases I can see its not.

There is such a thing as avoiding other areas of life by sort of hiding in one's work. And yet, there are some professions where it may be unavoidable to work over 40 hrs a week. Examples would be physicians, attorneys, law enforcement, politics, among others. So should it be 40, 50,60 hrs/wk before we consider it adequate vs. too much? That depends on the stamina of the worker AND the reasons why any time needs to be spent at work or on work. I think we can agree that 40 hrs is an adequate average for the average person. But anything over that requires justification. Using work to hide from other responsibilities, to feel "useful", etc. are things that require to be looked at closely. Even self-employed people whose income depends on how much they work need to draw the line somewhere. Like everything done in excess, "workaholism" can have very negative consequences: on health (physical and mental), on family dynamics, on marriage, and so on.

Well said! I'll bet most people could do everything they need to do in a four day work week. Just change the office hours and add a cell number to the business cards and there you have it: three day weekend!

45-50 hours is normal. Over 50 or 60 is too much.

It isn't, if you balance your off-time with socializing. Take care not to turn into a salaried hermit.
