Lots of kids I know don't know what it's like to play in the bush or just outside in the yard! They get bored and want to plug in their playstation or watch the tube.... If you want to share any outside games/activities you enjoyed as a kid, please do!

I agree that kids need to get out more, but I think that the Xbox, Ps2, TV, etc. are barely the reason to blame. I know quite a few people who are afraid to let their children do anything away from them b/c of all the nutcases out there. The FBI shows that child kidnapping has gone up by 125% since 1991. I think this is a big reason why kids aren't alone at the parks playing baseball until midnight or riding bikes at the park with their friends, but think it's because parents have something bigger to worry about. They're a lot of perverts and weirdos out there and parents scared of that. In the 1950's, 1960's, there were little to no kidnappings of kids. But in the 90's, that's when it went off the hook. Kids were outdoors more b/c parents had nothing more to worry about than a scraped knee. Now, you have to watch out for kidnappings, pervs, weirdos, etc. Child rape and child murder has been increased phenomeonally and the world is just not the safe, fun-loving 1950's anymore. I know, it's sad, but that's the way it is.

Here's to you outdoors.

Yeah just look at all the overweight kids in school today. When I was little and it was the summer at 8 I had breakfast and at 8:10 i was kicked out the house to play and got to come back for lunch(which was a sandwich and juice box in a bag on the front porch)and for dinner. After dinner I was sent back outside until the streetlight came on. Their was no game cube and PS1or2, no XBOX, their was dirt, balls, bats, bases, basketballs, pools, and tennis rackets. That's why American kids and teenagers are overweight now. As for cable what was that? Beside a dream of mine to get once I graduated from college!

Yes, I tend to agree with you on this subject. One of the Best Child-hood games I played was a game called Scavenger hunt. Where several parents get together and make up a list of oddities that kids must find out-doors. Like, a Bluejay feather, a Pinecone, a seed from a tree, a strange colored rock and so forth. The child that finds everything on the list will recieve a prize. The others get consolation prizes. It's Loads of Fun.

Boy times have changed. I remember during summer vacation leaving the house around 9 or 10am and coming home around 5 to help with dinner, then back out again when all was done and cleaned up. Unless I was allowed to invite friend or 2 over to go in our pool. I grew up in Northeast Philadelphia in a nice neighborhood, and we use to play bell's out or freedom with a bunch of kids within a 4 block radius. If you don't know what that is (some call it a different name)- one person was "it", home base (lock up) was a corner garage or driveway. Everyone else hid until IT caught you and sent you to lock up. Other people hiding would move from one place to another and free the person in lock up without getting caught. This game lasted for hours.

I have seen the same things. When we were younger, my sister, brother, and I, lived where there where lots of woods and creeks. My parents bought us super Nintendo, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, came cube, X box, ETC. My brother and sister fell in love with them and never played outside. I loved the woods. used to get lost in them for hours. I hated staying inside and found video games VERY boring. Now there are a lot of others out there that I probably never even heard of and my parents are still buying them for my brother. he only goes out at night and then they wonder why he is in trouble with the cops and why he dropped out of high school. I blame video games. One of his favorites is grand theft auto. My father swore that he would never buy games like that for his kids but he caved and is buying all those lousy games that let you kill cops and run over pedestrians. That is what this younger generation is into. It is why most are big, fat, and lazy. I take my little boy outside every day. It has gotten to the point where he grabs my hand and drags me out the door, and he isn't even 2 years old yet. I hope he loves being outside as much when he gets older.

Yes. When I was little I didn't get to play very much. I had to go plant a garden, pick a garden, mow the yard, or whatever my parents wanted me to do. So if I had a chance to sneak off into the woods and play, I was gone and they didn't see me until dark. Kids today has it so easy. Their parents don't instill discipline in their children. They let them lay up and play games all day, which I guess it's better than them wandering the streets and getting into trouble. They get so much nowadays that it doesn't mean anything to them.

You're right they don't play outside anymore, but there's also the daily reports of children being kidnapped and terrible things happening to them while they're just out trying to be kids. I think parents today have a hard time trying to keep their kids safe, but also allow them to have some fun as well....as a kid I used to ride my bike everywhere(with out a helmet!) and play all kinds of games until the street lights came on!

it is true. but that as more to do with the fact the todays world people are less community minded and no longer is the place were u life a safe palce for your kids to play outside. it was in my life time were the whole block would hold street partys and every one new each other and chilren played together and parents could play ball in the stret with the kids, not now no longer to its a shame but parents just dont feel afe if their kids out all day. i am a parent and my cild is 8 he is allowed out to play but not out of the street and this limits the time he spends outside before he gets bored.

There are numerous good solutions already. worry and over parenting. The media has over hyped crimes adversarial to newborn. The crime cost, considering WWII, has gradually fallen. children are safer in our streets than at any time contained in the perfect 60+ years. air con!!! It wasn't tremendous to sit down down in a house on a warm humid day. Now children imagine it takes fortitude to go out in any respect. strolling or cycling isn't socially ideal between the more youthful. You gotta have "wheels" and they extra effective be "cool". i'm particular video games and such have some referring to it too. are you able to imagine the way you're acquaintances ought to imagine of you, in case you in hardship-free words enable your children go out with the aid of themselves? The peer rigidity to hover over children is enormous. some thing is unquestionably lost. total generations omit the adventures and misadventures of childhood. this stuff we used to do, were likely as tutorial as any college room ever become. maximum were risky, and infrequently even unlawful. it is how we realized.

People are just keeping their kids closer now. They play outside, just in their own yards rather than in the street and neighborhood.
