Its not the 1975 reds - they only won the division by 5 games.

The 1998 Yankees might have been the first team to clinch in August, but are they still the earliest team to ever clinch?

The 1998 Yankees - they were the first team to clinch a playoff spot in the month of August.

The only team to come close to that since then is the 2001 Mariners, who clinched by beating Anaheim on September 6th of that year.
