You sort of asked a pretty general question. There are alot of circumstances that come into play when pursuing your rights in regards to child custody. One being if an order is already in place as far as placement, visitation, and child support. If so, and the mother is not compliant, file a contempt motion against her. If not, and you have a relationship with your child, petition the courts for one. If there is no arrangement already made and you've never had a relationship with your child, it's a bit more complicated. Social workers are called in, your child is appointed a guardian adlitem and everyone is evaluated. After that is done, then comes the initial meet and greet with your child in the presence of everyone involved , followed by supervised visitations and then regular visitations. If you were to supply more information, I'd be able to help you a little more.

You need to talk to a lawyer over the matter, each situation is different.
Both parents have a right to have something to do with their childrens lives, depending on the cercumstances though decide wither or not either or both parents have custody, now days.
You may want to look up the laws in your state.
It also depends on wither or not you are married or unmarried and there usually is a blood test taken for paternty cause it is easier to know that the mother is the mother cause she gave birth but as for the father, now days some women are sleeping with many men and all that other stuff.
good luck

Men or the father of the child? The child is just as much his as it is hers. Unless there is something about him that makes it dangerous for the child to be with him there shouldn't be any fighting about it, this stuff is supposed to be about the child and whatever arrangement is made should be made solely for the childs benefit! It would be nice if people could separate their bad feelings about splitting up from those of their parenting responsibilities but most can't. The mother generally gets to be the custodial parent, meaning the childs primary residence is with her but there are no guarantees thats how it works. Your best bet is to get everyone to put their hurt and anger aside and focus on the childs welfare when discussing these things.

You have the right to pay for the rest of your natural life and she has the right to bring them up and make all the decisions. You will of course be allowed to visit when it is convenient and she wants a wild weekend giving away what you used to share together.
