My floors really need sanding. I want to do it myself to save money. Is it really not doable? If it is doable, is there a good website for me to follow directions? Or can anyone provide with with directions and their experience if they've done it themselves? Greatly appreciate any input.

As a first time sander myself, it is very do-able. The trick with the large drum sanders is to keep it moving. You will get this advice, but take it from me, follow this advice. If you have softer wood, it is very easy to gouge the floors. Just start the movement, engage the sander, and dis-engage the sander before you stop. That will be just fine.

Second bit of advice is get an edger. It is a circular sander that gets to the edge of the wall. It is easy to use, but you can gouge, once again if not careful.

After all the sanding, we used sheepskin applicators (available at most home stores) and clear polyurethane. That is where you will have to bite the bullet. The poly is not cheap, but it saves you in the end. We did a base coat using the appropriate water based poly for newly sanded floors, and then used the clear poly for the other coats. Three coats was sufficient, but I'll put a couple more coats on to make it impermeable.

Last bit of advice, I promise!! High gloss and semi-gloss show imperfections better than the satin finish. Personally, I like the look of finished wood so the satin finish is better for me (also less slippery in socks!)

Hope this helps. Just take your time and don't skimp on the poly.

One reason why many professionals advise against it is that the floor sander is a heavy piece of equipment that can be quite difficult to maneuver smoothly, and it's easy to dig big gouges in your floors with it. You absolutely can do this, though, and the trick is to start in unobtrusive areas of the floor and concentrate so that you get used to how the sander handles. It requires a combination of moderate strength and significant dexterity to use effectively.

You can get good, practical, and detailed advice from the pros or from someone at the rental center where you would rent a floor sander. Keep the thing moving, and be deliberate about what you're doing, and you'll be fine.

I assume you are dealing with wooden floors that are solid wood and not some laminate like "pergo". this is usually done with a special sander that you may be able to rent. It is not technically hard, but you need to be careful not to over sand or gouge your floors. Check your local library for information on how to do this. This has been covered many time on programs like This old house and in home improvement magazines. also check with you local lumber company they may have someone to help you if you buy your supplies from them.
