My car cut out while waiting at the lights. I couldnt get it to start up again. When I turn the ignition there is a sound, it sounds like something spinning around. What do you think it could be?

Do you think it could be the starter motor? but would i have been able to start the car in the first place if this is the problem?

Do you think it could be the spark plugs?

the car is a 1993, escort xr3,

I suspect that the timing belt has broken but it's best to have a certified technician diagnose this.
If it is broken, it should be a relatively basic repair. I expect that your car has the 1.8L engine and it should only take the better part of a day to change the timing belt on this.

Sorry sweetie but I'd need to know a lot more info here. If the starter is still turning the car's engine over, then it is working...it has to be something else. If it is just making a spinning noise and NOT turning the engine over, then it likely IS the starter. I can say fairly confidently that the spark plugs have nothing to do with it whatsoever. You will need to take it to a mechanic or dealer to have it checked out. If it's the starter it's an easy fix. I am leaning towards "bad starter" but there's just not enough info to give you the exact answer. Hope this helped.

More than likely it's the starter. If the engine doesn't even turn over, and you just hear the spining sound, it is the starter. Same problem happened with my wife's 2000 Corolla last month. We at first thought it was the battery, so replaced that, and the car ran fine for about a week. Then the spinning sound came back, and she managed to get it restarted (the starter gears that were still good finally managed to engage to start the engine), so we immediately took it to the shop and it did turn out to be the starter, and not the alternator.

Sounds like an electrical connection failure. It would be difficult to diagnose without a thorough inspection of the state of the electrics and rust on a 1993 escort xr3.

Sometimes a completely flat battery makes that noise. Have you checked that first?

Incidently, is your car still at the traffic lights?

Sounds like the bendix on the starter is not engaging but that wouldn't of killed the car at the light, are you hearing a spinning noise or a clicking noise? Timing belt could of broke, that makes more sense.

Its your starter motor spinning and the fact the car won't start after stopping without warning suggests a fuel problem (blocked carburetor) or an electrical fault.

What are you doing with a '93 XR3? get rid of it and buy yourself a better car..like a '91 skoda. It sounds like your Cam belts gone and therefor your pistons will more than likely be bent/broken.(expensive job, more than the cars worth).
