And how easy is it to use? I've heard about external hard drives, but how easy are they to use? Do you have to keep the drive hooked up to the computer at all times? Is it hard for one's iTunes to find the drive?

I back up my iTunes to cd-r's. If you do it in data format, you can fit around 20 cd's worth of music on it. (I say around 20 because file sizes for songs differ based on length and format)

I burn mine onto cd-rw data disk. To do this, go to edit, then prefrences in iTunes. Then click the advanced tab, then the burning tab. Under disk format, select data cd. Then drag your library into a playlist and burn to a cd-rw. It may take more than one cd-rw. Store the cd's in a safe place and back your library up often.

use CD-r or CD-rw you could use DVD-r or DVD-rw you can get a lot on it if you make them a data disk. you could get a internal hard drive use it as a slave.
