Ok...I had borrowed my dads riding lawnmower to cut my grass, and as I was driving (noteven mowing yet) it made a weird clanking noise and died. My husband thinks I blew it up..but when I confronted my dad about it, he asked if I had switched speeds without moving and messed up the belts. I now realize that I did do this, but am not sure what happened. My husband can spin the part on the motor with the screened in part with his hand. What do you think happened to this? I need to find out what to do before I have to go buy a new one for my dad. It is an older one. 13 horse I think. Not sure of the brand. If it was just the belts, would my husband be able to spin this part with his hand?

That screened in part is the finger guard (keeps your hand/fingers from touching one of the flywheel blades and loosing it/them) if he can turn it and turn it, and it never feels resistence, that CLUNK noise sounds like the connecting rod went. (4 cycle engine, one cycle is the compression stroke, on that stroke it should be hard to turn it past it.....)
I am not sure on switching speeds without clutching (don't know style of trans)..... even the most worn out transaxle (not a shift on the go, you have to stop it to change gears) can change gears while still moving.... from what I've seen.....

Some mowers can be shifted without the clutch because all they do is change the pulley size to change speed. However some mowers have transmissions with gears that when shifted without the clutch will ruin the transmission. Not sure what type you have. Can you put it in neutral and restart the engine? If yes then you know the engine isn't the problem. Can you put it in neutral and push the mower? If not then it may be the transmission. Hard to tell without looking at the machine.

It sounds as though the belt broke. Call a local repair shop and ask them. Sometimes, they will come to your home and fix the problem, without too much cost.

You don't need to buy a whole new mower... Yes, that part can be spun by hand... Go buy a new set of belts and have your husband install them....

do a compression test on the motor first to find out if the cylinder or the piston or the reeds are ok. with no compression it will not run,and with low or very low compression it will not run or will barely run. Check that then go from there.
