Verizon and Sprint have the most reliable network. And Verizon might be slightly best since it has the most coverage area in the nation. But in terms of quality and price, I highly recommend Sprint.
For cell phones, I like Samsung A900 for Sprint. It's every solid phone with plenty of features - camera, mp3 player, bluetooth..(nowadays, every phone is packed with a lot of advanced features, we don't really have much choice not to have them). In my opinion, it's a better phone than the popular Motorola RAZR. http://www.bestincellphones.com/free-cell-phones-offers.asp
Sprint has cheapest plan for only $29.99 a month, but it only offers 200 anytime minutes. However, if 200 anytime minutes or less are all you need, it's simply the best plan you can get. In addition, this plan gives you free nights and weekends, and don't forget, night minutes start at 7 pm everyday, it's like getting 120 more anytime minutes everyday - no other companies offer a deal like this. And if you do go over 200 minutes for a month, don't worry, their Fair & Flexible plan Includes Anytime Minutes adjustable in 50-minute increments up to 500 minutes of overage at $5.00 each. So if you use 250 minutes, you only have to pay $34.99 for the month. See more plans and phones at http://www.bestincellphones.com/sprint.asp
* Sprint Fair & Flexible(SM) 450 - 2YR for $39.99/Month is the most popular sprint plan.

I would recommend Verizon Wireless the coverage with verizon from experience, has been better than any other cell phone company that I have been with.
All cell phone companies are going to offer specials where you can get a phone for free with a 1 or 2 yr service contract. Theres also the pre-paid phones but I think you spend as much in prepaid as you do having a contract. I would figure out what price your willing to spend, how many minutes youll need, and when there nights and weekends start, then what features you need.

Check out www.tmobile.com. They have the best deals on phones and plans. Of course, if you live in a rural area where you dont think there might be a lot of network coverage, you're better off with Cingular. I also heard that Sprint will be expaning their network - hasnt happened yet.
The RAZR and the PEBL are cool phones - the RAZR is just way way too common now.

I just got an LG8300 from Verizon. It has all those gizmos on it, but they all seem to come with them. But so far, with this phone, I have gotten the best sound and reception of any other phone I have ever had. The phone is going for $69, so it's not too bad of a price either.

Go to radio shack and get yourself a cingular plan. Radio Shack offers better phones for free with contract and cingular has a good network, but most of all are very helpful if you have a problem with your bill...which maybe not count much until you get a $500 bill because you went over your minutes. They will work with you and have excellent customer service

If you just want a phone to be able to call, maybe prepaid would be a good option, that way you don't have to have a contract and get screwed if you decide you want to change carriers or phones or whatever. Something like Cingular's GoPhone, where you can pay monthly, or buy minutes.
