My boyfriend and I just moved from our old place to a new one in a different city. He says he can smell the chlorine in the water here and his skin has been breaking out. He's afraid that we'll have to move if it doesn't clear up. Could it be that or is it probably stress from the move or something like that?

Call your local water authority and ask what the chorline content is. But stress can cause skin problems. If it is the chorine you may want to invest in renting or buying a water softener (salt based) or a reverse osmosis system (no salt) for the house.

In the meantime go to the store and buy an oil that you put on the skin before you leave the shower/bath but after washing. Pat dry after. You may need to change the type of soap, laundry soap and shampoo you use with the new water.

When I visit family in WA I have to use a dif soap and shampoo.

And, the change of weather can cause skin issues.

If the problem last more than three months go see a skin specialist.

It could be a combination of both, but then, it could also be only due to the chlorine content in the water in your new house. I give below an extract from the site:

http://science.howstuffworks.com/question652.htm

" While the bacteria-killing properties of chlorine are very useful, chlorine also has some side effects that can be annoying to humans, and possibly even hazardous. Chlorine has a very distinctive smell that most find unpleasant, and some find overwhelming. There is also the "itch factor" -- chlorine can cause certain skin types to become itchy and irritated. The hypochlorite ion causes many fabrics to fade quickly when not rinsed off immediately after exiting the pool. This is why your swimsuit looks faded and worn so early in the summer. "

You may feel unhappy about it, but I suppose you will have to move house again if your local authorities are unable to help resolve this issue !

It could be both. Try using mild soaps and shampoo until you get used to the water....like baby products. Or look for a water filter for your bathroom.
