Anything goes. Do you think Eugène Terre'Blanche falling off his horse tops the SA cricket squads memorable chase of 434? That's ok. What about the kick from Joel Stransky during the last minutes of the Rugby World Cup Final in 1995 against Mandela taking his first steps towards freedom?

Where does one start? The past 16 years have been filled with so many memorable moments:

some with astonishment: FW de Klerk making his famous speech freeing Madiba and unbanning the other parties;

some with anticipation: Madiba walking free in 1990

some funny: the funniest definitely Eugene TerreBlanche falling off his horse!

the most pathetic and heartbreaking at the same time: the AWB oomies who got shot next to their Mercedes when they were 'invading' Boputhatswana in 1994; the faction fighting in KZN; Hansie Cronje in his "the devil made me do it" speech

moment of shame: Invading Lesotho in 1999 (what was Buthelezi thinking??!)

the most endearing: the Madiba shuffle; drinking tea with Mrs Betsie Verwoerd in an act of forgiveness

some with pride: Madiba holding the Rugby World Cup high; the new constitution; willingness to disclose the horrors of apartheid on both sides at the Truth and Reconcilliation meetings; firing inadequate politicians (Madiba had to fire Winnie & of course Zuma got fired too) sending politicians to jail for corruption (wonder where Toni Yengeni is these days); three Nobel Peace Winners in one country, two having lived in the same street; the way South Africans clammored to support Kallie and Monique Strydom when they were kidnapped; our army and airforce helping flood victims in Mozambique in 2000; our first astronaut Mark Shuttleworth; our oscar-winning Charlize (who has never let a moment go by and not remind everyone that she is proudly South African!); our oscar-nominated (Yesterday) and winning (Tsotsi) South African made movies; getting the soccer world cup; having some of the best environmental laws and protecting our beaches and wildlife.

some with sadness: Bishop Tutu crying at the Truth and Reconcilliation Commission

So there are many memorable moments, but the most remarkable about South Africa is its people - through bad and good we all stand together in case of a crises; we might call each other names, there might be crime, we might have politicians with strange ideas and behaviours, but when push comes to shove we stick together. And the people make me proud to be one of them.

The 1995 Rugby World Cup Final without question!
The country was in transition and it was plain that after we won the WC, practically everyone was brought together. With the tradition of Springbok rugby, to win the WC was truly memorable and special.

Plus the manner in which we did it - Joel's drop goal, Joost's tackle on Jonah Lomu, James Small's tigerish defense and the fact that we were not expected to do well at all (foreign media and even some local media sections had written us off) - just made it great to be a Springbok and SA supporter.

Hey Porgie!

I think the most memorable moment for South Africa in recent time was when they announced that we would be hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup!!!! I'm sure everybody was surprised and happy that we would be hosting the 2010! I remember being in a shop called Dion's when they announced it and EVERYBODY was shouting and screaming in joy that we would host it! It was a wonderful time for me and a lot of other people. Even talking about this now has given me goose bumps! We have an even better momentous moment coming up with the 2010 and i cant wait!!!
