Try this: START > Control Panel > Connections > Show all connections.

Press right mouse button on your local LAN icon.

Select Properties and check "Show an icon on notification area if connected".

happens all the time. Your XP installation doesn't have the drivers for your LAN. You need to either install your LAN off your motherboard CD or find the drivers on the internet.

If you reinstalled windows, it might have lost your network settings / network card drivers. Go into control panel -> network settings. See if there are any things there. If not, your computer doesn't know that you have a network, and you need to set it up according to what you want to do. Or, if the network card isn't installed (you can find out in the device manager), you have to download a driver for it and install it.
