Not if you believe in God I hope.
I am not a Catholic but I'm a Christian, and some of the ways Brown twists the Bible, and makes a mockery of Christ's life, offends me very deeply.
During the crusades he no doubt would've been burned for heresy, but now we have to sit back and watch as his book gets made into a movie starring major movie stars, and people rate this mockery of God as being an "inteligent thriller",while Brown gets interviwed by magazines.
Obscene blasphemy aside, the book is filled with little twists and turns put there by Brown to emphasize his own intelectual superiority which he is definitely enamoured with.
He's an elitist, and this fatal carachter flaw drips from every page.
As always Robert Langdon (Brown's main carachter) is handsome, brilliant, and superior to the rest of us in every way.
As he himself puts it to his traitorous colleage Lee Tiebing
"Only the worthy find the Holy Grail..."
Langdon is, of course, one of the worthy as is his beautiful consort Sophie Nevue who also happens to be (according to Dan Brown) a direct descendant of Jesus Christ.
The Holy Grail is, in this case, not the cup from which Our Lord drank wine on His last supper, but the body of Mary Magdalene.
The Da Vinci Code claims that Mary Magdalene was in fact not a prostitute at all but a Princess from the tribe of Benjamin.
(Because Heaven forbid anything good should come out of a woman who once sold her body. It just doesn't pass the Dan Brown worthiness test).
She was married to Christ, and, before his death, was impregnated by him.
She was demonized by the people who apparently put the Bible together to keep the truth from getting out.Which makes most of what the Bible says (particularly the New Testament) a lie according to Brown.
It also triviliazes (in fact makes a mockery of) Christ dying on the cross. If He left descendants, the impact of His dying for our sins is dwindled to insignificance.
At every turn is Mary Magdelene (as the Benjamite Princess and, bearer of Christ's child) exalted; The Son of God relegated to an undermined afterthought; a carachter in Mary Magdalene Adoration.
A thousand years ago, before Christianity became wide spread, the people in the Western world worshipped a goddess.
This book is like a set back to those times.Only now it's ten times worse.
It called the Da Vinci Code because according to this book,Da Vinci supposedly belonged to a brotherhood that knew the truth about Mary Magdelene and Jesus Christ. And hid clues of this secret in his paintings.
The most apalling is the one of The Last Supper in which the womanly Apostle John is made to in fact be Mary Magdalene sitting next to Christ.
Then (on a more trivial note) there's the annoyingly reduntant frase "sacred feminine" which is -as I'm sure you know- a gramatical error. It should be "sacred female".
Anyway, I've gone on long enough.
I'm sure you get the idea.
Wether or not you still decide to read it is, of course, up to you.
I'm just telling you my opinion. That no, it's not worth your while to read becuase it's not the truth.
And if it's thought provoking, it is only in the sence that it causes you to think about arrogance and stupidity of some people.
It was an upsetting book for me to read. But whatever you decide, I at least hope the synopsis was helpful.
Thanks for reading this.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
I wrote that to get your attention...
I am a Christian woman and I believe deeply that God watches over us (and the mistakes we make) and I read the book years ago... I couldn’t put it down till I was finished 4 days later I was done and blabbing all over town at what a good job Dan Brown did in writing this book. No matter what others say - this book will make you think! There are theories that are close and far from reality which allow you to reach within and contemplate what the world is really up to.
The movie did not echo what the book gave in detail. Your mind will create a movie that you can enjoy. Read the book, reach within, open your mind, and discover what creativity can be. Dan Brown used some fact to create a vision of fiction that works very well.
I have met people that didn’t like to read that were addicted to this book and began reading other books because of the way this was written. Some may say it was boring but if you are a good reader.. you will not be bored.
I went out and got the next book… Angels & Demons by Dan Brown… The title made me very skeptical but once I got passed the title – I saw that this book is the continuation of the story in the Da Vinci Code. For those who have not read the second book – this too was worth the read.
Open your mind to new possibilities – I believe strongly in God always have, always will… these books wont harm your faith.

The Da Vinci Code, as a conspiracy theory, really is a load of b*****it and if you look into it most of the 'facts' in it are actually made up. The story is decent but I have read better books in my life, although I would not deter you from reading it. As you say 'it is an enjoyable read that encourages you to think and use your imagination', but keep in mind that it is a story and nothing else.

As with any fictional story line that has historical references in it, read it as a story, not as fact or even as based on fact. Then you will enjoy it in the environment in which it was intended to be read. Dan Brown has written a great work of fiction. A fictional story that has sparked many discussions and controversy. How many fictional books can boast about doing the same thing??
I really enjoyed reading all of Dan Brown's books. I enjoy his style of writing and appreciate the level of research that he put into each one.
Don't take anyone else's word for how you will like a book. Read it for yourself and decide independently. That's what the author intended all along anyway.
Happy reading!

I'm just about done with the book (got it at Walmart for $5 the other day..) and it is fabulous. It is a very enjoyable read - fast paced, imaginative, twists and turns - it is very good. I have found - rather than 'conspiracy theories' I have been more prompted to look up art and architecture that I was not familiar with and look more closely at that which I was familiar with. Definitely read it. You'll be glad you did!

I read it before I even heard anything about it. I was in a book club in school and it was the next book they decided to leave. I swear I didn't even know what it was about. Read it, got sucked in, and couldn't put it down. I fell in love with it on a basis of it was just a good book. As you are reading it you can see how it is contriversial and how people are going to be up in arms about it, but you get pasted it and just read the book. It's just that...a book. A fictional book. It is definately worth the read, and even if you don't like it, you will now know why everyone is up in arms...or you may be even more confused!!! =D

I think it is still worth it to read. The story is very engrossing and a complete page turner. You get caught up in the book and can not put it down, even beyond the controversy. Dan Brown is a great story teller with cliffhanger endings. I recommend it!

If you have any standards at all regarding what makes a good work of fiction, then avoid DVC. It's a horribly written, shabby thriller that was only successful because Dan Brown convinced a lot of people that he was letting the cat out of the bag about Christianity.
Really, the only reason to read it is just to see it for yourself. If you take the time, you'll be astounded at just how poorly written it is, how terrible the characterizations are, how stilted the prose is, how mindless the twisted logic is, how BAD it is overall.

Conspiracy theory or not I just thought is was an overhyped book. I didn't find it interesting, thought much of the plot line was just plain dumb and didn't like the fact that it was so inconsistent in it's writing style it often appeared to have been written by 2 different people.

Yes, you will...it's a really good book, which is one reason it is so controversial...
The thing to keep in mind is that it's a fictional book, and it really gets you thinking...
Personally I loved it, but I'm reading Angels and Demons at the moment & like it even more than The DVC...
Enjoy :)
