I think romance is overrated--I like a manly man--who only shows his sensitive side to me in private. It doesn't matter what he looks like. He has to be strong and masculine, likes sports, knows how to fix things, has a "take charge" attitude, and the only soft spot he has is for me.

It's not the traits that determine romance. It's what he does. He should be caring, compassionate, and sensitive. This doesn't mean sissy, just that he cares enough about his girl to pay attention to the details.
Learn things like her favorite color, songs, flowers, restaurants, etc... You want to know these things for future reference. If she likes orchids, you don't want to give her daisies for her birthday. There are a million ways to show you care without saying the words, and that's what is romantic.
Examples:
For gifts, don't buy her things that you like, concentrate on what she would like. A porn movie might get you in the mood, but it might turn her off. Cooking, cleaning, or weight loss gifts are generally a bad idea.
When you go out to eat in celebration of her, pick the places that she likes, not your favorite sports bar. Hooters probably isn't on her list. If you are cooking at home for her, think about what she likes, maybe it's chicken instead of your favorite steak.
If you know she's on her feet a lot at work, offer foot massage on special days.
If you pay attention to her, and she to you, then the small things that you notice, and make use of, are the most romantic of all. It doesn't have to be big or expensive, just something from the heart. Even though most guys hate shopping, many women don't appreciate this. We want you to spend as much time choosing our gifts as we did on yours. While that's not necessicary, you should at least make it look like you did. Go to Hallmark, don't send an ecard. When she's had a bad day, try to cheer her up, maybe offer to cook dinner that night. Send her off for a relaxing bubble bath while you watch the kids. When she's bent over with morning sickness, get a cool cloth to place on her brow. When she's got a headache, get her the medicine and water from the cabinet. Offer a blanket when she's cold, turn on the fan when she's hot. Give her a shoulder to cry on when she needs it.
Of course, she should be making an equal effort with you. If she gets all the pampering and special treatment in the relationship, then maybe it's time to rethink the efforts, or get a new girl as the case may be.
