I have a 2001 Ford escape and my cruise control will not engage now.The cruise indicator light lights up when I turn on the cruise, but when I press the se/accel, nothing happens now.Is there a fuse for this that could be bad? It has worked before in the past. All i did recently was change the air filter.Anything I could have done there?

First of all I listed a site I often refer to before doing work on a car. I have saved my customers a lot of money by referring them to a dealer for a recall and then viola I have a trusted customer. There are no recalls On the '01 escape for cruise issues

Second. On the Escape there is a switch on the brake pedal which disengages the cruise. The switch may be stuck or disconnected This is not the same as the brake light switch. If it is a standard transmission then check the clutch also.

The Cruise works off of a cable and that may have become detached from the accelerator under the hood.
The cruise motor ay have come detached (unplugged)
All of the thinking for the cruise comes from the ECM or PCM the brain of the car. so if everything else is working then I would check these items.
Oh ya check the fuse.
Hope this helps.

My mom had a 01 escape. It did the same thing. I think there was a recall on it - take it to Ford and find out.

You may have pulled the vacuum line off of its connection
Look for a small black rubber hose. Sometimes you get lucky and can hear the vac sucking air to locate it.

It's most likely that a cable isnt properly tightened ro something as small as that. give your wires a good tugging again - it shd work then. I had a similar problem with my Jetta; it was a loose cable connection after I'd changed something like you did.

Ford had done a lot of recalls on cruise controls. (they were burning up) you should check ford.com and see if your model is on that list.
