Dale Sr. is a legend because of the fact he has won 7 championships. Only Richard Petty say that.
His driving style was very nerve-racking as well.
On the track he was a mean son of a gun. Off the track he would try to what he could for the little guy.
Yup he was a jerk at times, but when you say Nascar, usually the name that pops is Petty or Earnhardt.
I think he deserves the title legend.
As well has Richard Petty.

Excuse me, "never a fan favorite" what rock have you been hiding under?????? He was a fan favorite. He was loved by several drivers. What made him so great was how he worked his way UP in stock car racing. Yes the run on oval tracks, but I guarantee you that his tire changers made more money than any of you can even think about. You could never be sure what he would do in a race. Most drivers would tell you that they were always looking to see where that black # 3 was. The nickname "intimidator" fit him to a T. He wasn't afraid to run the hell out of his car, he wouldn't back down from anyone. If you were watching a race and he was behind you never counted him out until the race was over. You just didn't ever know what he could or would do. Yes I was a great fan of his.

Probably the fact that all of his contemporary drivers hated his guts. The fact that he was stupid enough to alter his head restraint device and refuse the standard upgrades that would have clearly saved his life. And of course all of the trash w/disposable incomes who need a celebrity to worship because their lives are so hollow and desperate. The only thing that makes him a legend is the special interst media who use celebrity and entertainment figurse to keep the masses content, fat and preoccupied while the stuff that they should care about or have some interest in goes by while they watch the race.

His death made him a legend!
Dale Sr was a great racer, but most people couldn't stand the man and he was never a fan favorite. His death made him revered and an instant legend.
