NEVER. California has an enormously productive economy, which for a nation would be one of the ten largest in the world. California is responsible for 13% of the United States gross domestic product , while the state population constitute only 12% of the United States population. Someone has to keep up with the economy since Bush and his cronies have sent it to the crapper.

An Area a little larger than Texas and America's ability to function is in question?
What is in either area that the rest of the country couldn't do without or get someplace else? I don't see anything that any of that area offers that couldn't be made up in another section of the US.
What America has done over the past 230 years, it did with every state's contribution. Some more, some less but all helped make America what it is today.

You are so arrogant - that is is truly amazing. Yes the USA would survive and be better than we are now. California only offers produce that Florida could subsidize. California also has ports which could easily be relocated to Oregon or Washington. The north east doesn't really have much more than a few factories.
Let's turn the question around and see if California and the North East could survive without the south east, Midwest, south west and northwest? Where will your food come from? What about vehicles? Manufacturing plants? Economy?

Could we perhaps keep California without the Hollywood and USC Berkeley campus left-wing radicals, like Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda, Michael Moore, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer? And the northeast without Hillary, Ted Kennedy, and Charles Schumer? Then the whole nationn would be a little less scary.

California's only real contribution is farming. Everything else here could just as easily be done in any other state.

it would look like England in "V for Vendetta." without the cool accents. a greater effectual question could be, What might usa look like if the individuals who vote for the Republicans by way of fact of "faith" and "morals" wakened and found out they have been fooled?

California has a very very very very large economy and is a huge player in elections (even though commonly democrat)
It's a good counter-balance to the often conservative texas.
I'm sure the US could function but it would definitely loose a lot of population and I'm not sure how that would affect the economy.
