Something to keep in mind is how they are getting in your house. Go around the house and make sure the the windows, doors and any other openings are tightly sealed with the appropriate sealant (a good silicone caulk is flexible and long lasting). Also make sure bug screens cover any vents in the attic.

Then as others have said find a barrier bug spray and spray around the outside of the house and up the foundation as often as indicated (the poison you buy should have directions on how far up the walls and how far away from the house to spray as well as how often). I bought a concentrate and one of those multi-use pump sprayers for this as spraying around the outside of the house can be a lot of area to cover and it is much more economical that buying the premixed stuff. Two tablespoons per gallon is about all it takes to mix up a batch.

Once all this is done you will hopefully have far fewer bugs inside and won't need to use the poisons so close to the family.

I used to wrok at Home Depot in the Garden section, so I have some knowledge here. Depending on the problem, you may need to hire someone to do it for you, but if it's not terrible try using smoke bombs to kill the bugs you can't see, like the ones that hid behind furniture and in walls. You should probably let your house air out for a day or so, stay with family or at a hotel. If the problem is just an occasional bug then use a Home Insect product to spray each bug and the areas where you find them . Ortho has a good one that won't stain and is non-toxic for humans!

A lot of professional exterminators now use "barrier" systems where they spray around the outside of your house to keep the bugs from getting in, minimizing how much inside spraying gets done.

Also, I've seen in catalogs electronic bug repellents that you plug into an outlet. It sends a current through the walls that is supposed to drive the bugs out.

Try Boric Acid. You can get this at hardware store or WalMart. It's a white powder that you can sprinkle around baseboards or anywhere. Not harmful to humans. Many years ago it was used as an eyewash.

If you put sliced up apple into an ant pile it will kill them. They eat it and feed it to the queen.

Use borax. And use vinegar or coffee grounds to repel ants.

Good luck!
