I come from Wyoming and find it pretty odd that when i speak to people from different states (either from the east or west coast) some people have no clue that in Wyoming we do have electricity and that we too drive cars. We also have regular toilets (not outhouses), but some people i talk to that have never been to Wyoming, tend to think we still live like the old west. Do schools teach people the wrong information when it comes to Wyoming? Or are some people just ignorant? This question is not to offend anyone, i just want to understand why some people think Wyoming is way behind its time.

Well, you arent suprised by the misconceptions now, are you?

I am very ignorant of States, that I havent visited, and those that I have, I am glad I did to clear up misconceptions.

Now, there "are" some States, where the citizens actually DO, use outhouses! Not a lot, but some do, like in West Virginia, (personally seen these), as to the others, I will not surmise, because I dont want to show ignorance in case I would be wrong.

I am really ignorant of different Countries, and the Internet has opened my eyes to a lot of things, I never knew...And am amazed at how ignorant I still am, (not knowing everything will do that to a person, so, I will have to find that "one" who does, and start questioning him/her until I get tired of talking, eh?)...

I wish you well..

Jesse

Hi, I find it really strange that people don't realize you have regular toilets in Wyoming! I'm from California, but have visited Wyoming--beautiful state! Before I went there, I wasn't worried about having to use an outhouse. When I went to Canada, people kept asking me if I was amazed that people didn't live in igloos and kayak to school. I was a little insulted, but apparently some Americans have gone up there saying things like that. I suspect mostly they were joking--but maybe not!

However, back to your question, I think modern Wyoming is probably not discussed much at all in school in most East Coast and West Coast states, beyond Yellowstone. So when they think of Wyoming, they think of the old west and don't really stop to think that it just might have modernized since the late 1800s.

People are either ignorant or trying to be funny. Being that Wyoming is a funny state, that you don't hear to much about except that its like the old west, people tend to make fun.

Don't get so bent out of shape about it.. I live in New York and people swear that all of the city is bad with FLOODS of violence like a street war and thats not true

My guess is that many schools aren't teaching anything current about Wyoming at all and that when people hear about Wyoming, they think about the historical stories they heard about Wyoming's past.

So, yes, people are just ignorant. Don't take it personally. Just laugh and gently correct them.

The only thing we were taught in school was that our food comes from the center of our country and that the people are a little bit different than us.

I never realized how different until I was on a layover in Las Vegas and there was a plane going to Cheyenne...maybe? But they actually wore cowboy hats and had special luggage for it! We still laugh about it today. We thought that was only in the movies.

They were also very scared of our flight - which had a lot of minorities on it, going to New York. Alternatively, I was returning from Utah and I found it unsettling that the population out there was so homogenous.

Haha, I'm sure teachers don't teach their students that 'Wyoming doesn't have electricity'. That comes from peoples' ignorance. I live in Kansas and people think everyone lives on a farm, which is completely not true. All of that is just nonsense and small-mindedness. Let people think what they want, even if it is completely wrong.

It is kind of strange how the system seems to be. If you ever go into a kindergarten class and the lower grades, you would be amazed at what kids know, but something happens between that time and when they graduate. I can't believe how many people graduate from High School and just have no understanding of anything.
I definitely think the school systems in America need an overhaul.

When I was in school, we weren't even taught about Wyoming. Nothing was ever mentioned about it, but I never felt that people that lived there were like you described. I always figured that they have the same things as everyone else does.

None of the nine adults I work with have any clue where Wyoming is. Ignorance is bliss.
