Subarus are excellent cars and were rated top in customer satisfaction and reliability by consumer reports. I had a 2003 Outback Sedan. An excellent car but the pickup was only fair. The new Outbacks and Legacys are great. The main difference between the non-aspirated versions (everything but the Outback XT and Legacy 2.5GT) is the suspension. The Legacy's suspension is lower.
I have a WRX and it's the best car I've ever owned. Once a subaru owner, always a subaru owner. Hoping to buy a new WRX STI Limited this Fall or the new production 2007 Legacy Spec B.

I have had my 2006 Legacy for two months and 1,011 miles and I'm very happy with it. It was kind of an odd impulse purchase for me. I went to look for a Forester, which I had really researched thoroughly, but I just didn't like it. I've never owned a similar vehicle before and ultimately wanted to stick with a "car" instead of a utility vehicle. The Outback caught my eye, as it was much more what I was accustomed to. It has just about the same carrying capacity as the Forester and it is WAY more comfortable. I admit that I made one mistake, though. I thought that $3,400 was too much of a premium to pay for the six and I bought a four cylinder. (You also get a 6 CD in-dhas changer with the six.) I am already negotiating with the dealer to take it back as a demo or something. I find that I just don't have the freedom to "make a move" in traffic without thinking about it and I miss that. I have two stop signs that I deal with in my daily (1.3 mile) commute and I need something to be THERE right off the line. I drove a Legacy GT and I am really impressed with the car, but the turbo doesn't spool up until about 3 grand, so I am looking for a 6-cylinder for that low end torque and power right off the line. If this matters to you, buy the 3.0 R or better 6-cylinder car. The 4-cyl is "okay" once you can get the revs up and shift into Sport Mode or use the "manual" shifter, but you just can't create your own openings the way you can with a six.
That's my ONLY regret, though. I had a Honda Accord for 7 years and I never thought I'd buy anything but another Honda. The Outback has been quite satisfactory, other than the lack of low RPM power. The ride is a bit rougher than the Accord, but I expected that. It's not objectionable, though. I have yet to take it on a road trip and I have yet to see whether that all wheel drive really makes a difference, as I am just completing my break in period of 1,000 miles. Man, I must be getting old. I used to say, "If you want them to run fast, break them in fast," but I've actually kept it under the prescribed 4 grand most of the time. It does track pretty well and follows the line I choose in a turn. I just have not explored the limits yet.

Subaru. All the way. Test drive both Rav4 and the Legacy and a few things will become apparent very quickly. The Subaru wagon has a much lower center of gravity, not just because it stands lower than the Rav but also because of it's engine design. It has a boxer-type engine that only Subaru and Porsche use. Take a look at this site:
http://www.drive.subaru.com/SubaruDrive-Sum02/Piston-Cranky.asp
You'll find the Subaru will be quicker and nimbler. Subaru's AWD is born of over 50 yrs in the industry. Check out www.subaru.com for more info. They're at the forefront of AWD technology. Only Volvo and Audi may come close. The Rav4 is ok but Toyota's 4Runner is a better product for them. Rav4 is "fad" car that Toyota produced to get in on some of the action at that price range.
It's true what someone has already mentioned about Subaru owners staying Subaru owners. When we had our fist baby, I did some research and wanted a vehicle that was dependable, safe, but didn't want to compromise drivability and a bit of performance. We opted for a Subaru wagon in 1998 and never looked back. They're really fun to drive, and specially with a 5-spd stick, it performs! We're on our third Subaru vehicle now. Also our third child : )
Drive both, and decide. You know where my vote goes....good luck!

I've had a 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT since September of 2004. I really enjoy driving it, and I haven't had any significant problems with it - certainly nothing that required repairs - but there are several thing I find extremely annoying about it.
As a result, my next vehicle will probably be either a Toyota Tacoma, or a 4Runner.
You can read a full review I wrote about it on epinions.com

I'll tell you this. I have never met a Subaru owner that went out and bought a different make of car. Subaru owners stay subaru owners. I have one, my family has them, my wife and her family have them. We went to the Mitsubishi dealership driving my wifes subaru to shop for a car for a friend. The dealer said he didn't even want to come out because He knew subaru people wouldn't buy a Mitsubishi. Sure enough my friend bought a Forester and he loves it too.

Had an Outback for 140,000 miles and loved it. Went to replace it but they had actually reduced the foot area. Good grief, why would they cramp your feet? So got Toyota instead.
