I recently read a book on goals and how having goals was important to succeeding in anything in life, but it really said that goals without a major purpose are ultimately not as effective. The reasoning is that goals are targets that you can hit, where a purpose is a reason for doing everything in life and no matter where you are in life you always have that purpose.

Some of the examples were pretty deep...like one person who had several goals such as to run a marathon but his purpose was to raise awareness for cancer (as he eventually died of it). In the end of his life, he had raised awareness for it substantially, so i guess he achieved his purpose in death.

Most purposes done have to be so deep, but I am curious as to what other people who have consciously worked out their purpose in life have to say.

What is your purpose and how did you come up with it?

my family is pretty broken up and i had a hard childhood.

i want to have a happy family, and i don't want my children to have to worry too much about their parents money problems (i got trips to the eye doctor for my birthday because we didn't have insurance for a while..etc). i also don't want them to worry about their parents quarrels (my parrents were divorced, and had to be the go-between for many of their fights).

i want to be able to support my family, so i'm persuing a carreer in psychcology. i want to have my own practice some day...what i'm going right now is studying at my university and getting involved in the psychology so i can get into a good grad school program.

i've also worked on my personality traits (i used to have problems with my anger and fighting) because i've seen how anger can tear a family apart. i have a healthy relationships with my boyfriends, and i'm very happy to knwo i'm well on my way to a happy future :D

My purpose is to encourage, inspire, challenge, support and promote a great day to everyone I encounter, everyday. To raise the awareness that optimism has shown solid, scientific proof that those who practice it live longer and higher quality lives. To teach others that things such as opinions, judgments and anger really only harm those who hold them.

I came up with all of this when I was very young, in grade school. I have always taken great joy in creating joy and optimism in others. I've always felt that complaining was a waste of time - time that is better spent on taking diplomatic actions to solve the situation rather than throw another log on the fire (complain).

My purpose in life is to serve as Clergy - to help those in need of spiritual guidance. Being female, this has been quite a challenge since most Christian religions won't accept women as clergy. I was raised Lutheran, and this was definately true when I was looking to fulfill my purpose (20+ years ago). I searched for a path that I felt comfortable with and could serve as I need to. I am now a Celtic Priestess, and legally ordained by the state I live in (Ohio).
I have performed weddings, coming of age ceremonies for young men and women and a baby blessing/naming. I have counseled those who come to me in need, I teach the path I am educated in and much more.
My work is not done, it is an on-going service that I am most fulfilled and content with.

I don't look at life altruistically. In between paying the taxes and all other obligations, I just want to have the best time I possibly can. I don't have a deep purpose nor do I want one. I want to approach people in a way that brings out the positive in them and the positive in me. That's it.

The major theme in my life has been to learn the lesson of patience. I have plenty of opportunities to reinforce this learning with my patients. It has been a common thread throughout my life, having to wait for everything. I didn't just come up with it. It kind of hit me in the head one day that this is what my life is all about.
