It's a horribly written so-called "suspense thriller" that contains neither suspense nor real thrills.

Dan has this idea about the Holy Grail that he got from the "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" dudes. So he tries to build a story around it, does a lot of slipshod research, slaps it together with spit and toilet paper, then proclaims "I've written this book of fiction. All the art history within is totally accurate. All the church history, including Opus Dei, is accurate. All the conspiracy stuff, including the Prioy of Sion, is accurate. All of the research I've done is true stuff, only I've told a suspense story with it instead of writing a documentary."

The problem is this, the research was crap, and the story was a wooden, unrealistic, boring, mindless piece of drivel filled with inane leaps of bad logic and really poor, overly expositional writing.

Which isn't that big a deal, really. A bad novel is a bad novel. The problem is that people wanted to believe that Dan had let the cat out of the bag, so they took it seriously, buying the book in truckloads. They became wild fans, buying up a lot of other related non-fiction books, all of Dan's other books, and booking tours to Europe to take "The DaVinci Code Tour" and see all the big secrets for themselves.

Then when his research was shown to be so much fish paste, he just threw up his hands and said, "Hey, it's just a novel!" Right, then why are people coming into churches and tuning into TV programs every day to understand the story "behind" the DVC? People want to believe they've gotten in on this BIG SECRET, so they set aside both their brains and their standards for a decent book of fiction and bought Dan's book hook, line & sinker.

Frankly, the book had an intriguing concept, but the execution was SO bad, I regret the time spent reading it. Fortunately, since the writing was so simplisitic anyway, it didn't take that long...

I saw the move and loved it. Everyone should not get too serious over this as it is a work of fiction based upon an amalgam of facts and fantasy as well as suspense. The author has written a spellbinding novel if you don't take it to heart as many have done. After all, fiction is fiction. He is being handsomely rewarded for being an excellent writer/novelist!!!

I enjoyed the book and the movie. I do know that it is fiction and therefore haven't lost or confused my faith with a very interesting story.

An interesting story but poorly written. I felt like I was reading an encyclopedia entry with occasional dialogue.
