Because I watched when Mark McGwire hit is record-breaking (at the time) HR on FOX and Joe Buck was estatic when it happened. But when Big Papi hit the Walk-off to send Boston to game 5 (which is more exciting than a Mark McGwire HR) all he said was, "We'll see you later tonight."

As the previous responses have indicated, Joe Buck is the Cardinals lead announcer when he's not working for Fox, so he's got an obvious slant toward Cardinal events. In the case of Big Papi, Buck was probably trying to be low key like a Vin Scully, who rarely gets excited about anything (even though he's obviously pulling for the Dodgers). On top of that, when McGwire broke the record, he did something that most people thought would never happen. Hitting a walk-off homerun isn't anywhere near as rare as breaking a 37 record old record...

If Joe Buck is insulting your team, you should take it as a compliment. The guy is blessed with a good announcer's voice, but he's a total Cardinals' homer and someone who doesn't really understand the game of baseball all that much.

Don't give too much credence to what most play-by-play guys say - they're paid to announce what's happening, and not to analyze. The days of intelligent baseball minds like Ernie Harwell announcing games are long gone, and most of the guys now are just talking heads.

And while Buck doesn't hate the Sox, it's still pretty obvious that he's a fan of the Cards.

He doesn't hate any team. He came up with his father Jack Buck who was the voice of the Cardinals for many years. Of course Joe was a Cardinal fan growing up and the excitement of "Steroid Boy McGwire" breaking the record came out because of him being a Cardinal fan. Now that Joe is on the network, he can't show favoritism to millions of fans all over the country. I'm sure he was excited, he just couldn't show it.
