They are up there, you just can't see them. A couple of reasons may be at play: first, since you are in a big city, the lights can drown out your ability to see the stars. If you go out into a dark secluded area far from the city, you should be able to see more. Secondly, it may be cloudy or hazy, which you may not be able to tell at night, and this could be the problem. Finally, your field of vision by be obstructed by trees or buildings, so make sure you are in an open area and have a full 360-degree view. Also check at different times during the night, as the sky view is changing.

People usually cannot see stars in a city, especially one with plenty of lights. Though I've never been to Nashville, I believe there are a lot of lights there.
The effect is similar to what happens when you are on a road at night, looking at a few bright spots on it. When a vehicle with full headlights passes by, the spots disappear from view, but they are still there. A few very bright spots will still be visible, but maybe just barely. When the vehicle moves on, the spots are still there.

Let me guess... new houses in your city? Light pollution is making it hard to see stars. Top that with the polution being kept around by the heat wave the east is facing and everything gets blurry real fast. Although... you might just need glasses (hey I didn't notice my eyes going bad).

The stars are behind a rich and thick layer of smog. You should start and environment cleanup effort so the sky cleans up and then you can see stars. (make sure that this campaign includes light pullution eradication as well)

Go out to the country, away from all the light "pollution", and you'll be able to see the stars again!
