Yes yes....I have the book by Rhona Jaffe and the DVD also *and I had originally had in on VCR tape*. I was at that time *and still am to this day* a HUGE D&D fan, so I guess it only made sence I grativated towards Robby, Kate, Daniel, Jay Jay and Merlin the Minah Bird.

One of Tom Hanks' earliest if not THE earliest performances. Based on a Rona Jaffe novel and modeled on "Dungeons & Dragons", it explored with a group of friends what happens when role-playing in a fantasy game is taken too far (i.e. it overlaps into your real life). I haven't heard as much about that phenomenon concerning D&D lately, but then this movie came out in the mid-80s it was a serious concern. The central figure on the game, the one who nearly overwhelmed Tom Hanks' character's life, was representative of his dead brother, as I recall.
Thanks for reminding me! I was in my teens when I first watched it, so I didn't think a lot of satanic influence (which often gets leveled at D&D) was there, but it did have spine-tingling moments. Have a terrific day!

I love Tom Hanks and remember the movie, but I really didn't care for it. I was never into D&D...but it certainly reinforced anyone who wasn't into it's idea that people who were were a little weird. of course, he went completely nuts. I knew people who played it, and they never got that into it.

I just saw this the other day in the bargain bin at Walmart. Thought about getting it, but decided against it. I've played D+D for about 20 years, so I don't think this pseudo-documentary would do anything for me.

The movie was awesome. Tom became obsessed to the point where he was institutionalized. Classic.

Yeah, but as far as movies where imagination goes too far, I would say Cloak and Dagger is better.
