Hitchhiked to Kickapoo Creek festival (southern Illinois - not too much after woodstock) instead of studying for tests at college.

Stayed all weekend with only the clothes I had on. (Army jacket, jeans) Everyone shared everything so food / smoke was no issue. There were naked mud slides and bands playing just like the much bigger woodstock. People were standing naked jamming to the music.

Got a ride back with a motorcycle gang from Indiana. All I remember was they passed on curves.

Man don't you remember the old joke? "If you remember "The 60's" you didn't take part." it really wasn't that much different today except we laughed a lot more and a dollar was still worth something. When you had $20,00 on a Friday night you could buy what ever "floated your boat" go to a movie with your girlfriend and get something to eat as well. People were more friendly and yeah we had long hair and bell bottoms but when I see the portrayals in the movies about that time they take a very simplistic view. Not everybody was stoned around the clock and we were as clean as everyone else. Don't believe all that crap about hippies being dirty and wiped out on acid. of course their were a few idiots but they were the exception rather then the rule. I wouldn't change those times for anything.

I remember the hippies. I was about twelve when I really started to notice them. There were different kinds of hippies. Some were into drugs, but many were not. They did love communal living. Some went big into eastern religions, some were Jesus freaks. Some were into wild random sex, but many were faithful to one partner. Also, many were dirty(espousing the idea that they were helping to save the world from water pollution), but some still loved their daily bath. There were simply many varieties of hippies. By the time I turned eighteen the movement was almost dead, so I just missed it!

Back when I was a roadie for Cannned Heat, me and the boys came across one of those Spotted Tree Free frogs from the amazon when we were playing in South America, you know, the kind where you lick their butts and hallucinate. We thought it was a joke, and licked some frog butt. We had a gig in 7 hours in Machupichu, so we figured what the hell. We ended up lost in the jungle, frying our asses off, and got lost. Now, this was before cell phones, so we had no global positioning, no directions. Here we are, lost in the jungle hallucinating, running in circles tring to find something tangible. Then we ran ran across these two natives that had skulls stringed together around their necks (small skulls like a child). We thought they were cannibals, but we right. They ate two of our road crew and made us watch. Man, I tell you what, I was getting the CRAZIEST visuals. All sorts of colors and imaginary creatures walking wround. I had Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida in my head the whole time man. FAR OUT! Luckily I was so messed up, I jumped up at spear point and started to do the freak out dance man, the freak out dance. They stabbed me twice with their spears, but it couldn't stop me man. I was freaking out. It scared the cannibals and they ran off into the jungle. We danced around the half eaten carcasses of our friends, and spun circles till I passed out. Then I woke up, probably a day later, and realized I was in South America, I was in Detroit man. Far Out!
