Birds. The Japanese are a no-nonsense bunch, with little appreciation for symbolism.
Seriously. The individual designer probably attaches some significance to the feathers, but I don't believe that feathers have a deeper meaning here. Traditional Japanese art has mostly been a depiction of reality. The artists saw no need to make a thing mean something other than what it was. This may not be true of anime, but in the traditional art of Japan, it generally is. They truly appreciated the beauty of the world for what it was, not what it represented. For example FF8 had quite an opening. It was visually stunning (especially the feathers). It was a scene that was beautiful without the need to be anything other than what it was.

The single white feather as a symbol of cowardice derives from cockfighting and the belief that a cockerel sporting a white feather in its tail is likely to be a poor fighter. Pure-breed gamecocks don't show white feathers, so its presence indicates that the cockerel is an inferior cross-breed.

The feathers mean hope, trust, freedom, love, and luck. They are symbols of a culture with much significance.

how about black feathers and , especially black crows in general? I seem to get the idea they(crows are very smart birds with a minor language) have signifigance to Japanese, in a way Westerners wouldn't see. Also, how about the noise of Cicadas, especially in summer , it seems summer is impossible to draw and animate in Japan without noisy cicadas. . .
