Italy would have won...in the 30 min overtime. I doubt it would have gone as far as penalty shots and in any case, they would have won in penalty shots too....didn't they just beat France??
Forza Italia!!!

I think Australia would have upset Italy, Buffon may be a good keeper, but not when it comes to penalties, and the Australian keeper almost caught Totti's penalty.

If you watch Buffon trying to save penalties, you can tell that he would have had a very difficult time in a penalty shootout. Against France, he never came close to saving even one penalty, he went the wrong way on all of them, Trezeguet's would have gone in had it not hit the post. In sudden death, I am sure Barthez would have ended up saving one before Buffon ever could, because I saw him go the right way a couple of times. Now I too, don't know much about the Australian goalkeeper, but he did come quite close to saving that one that Totti took, so I really think he would have managed to save at least one if it had gone to a shootout. To tell you the truth, having Buffon guarding your goal in a penalty shootout is like having no one there at all. Some years ago, I saw Buffon saving penalties, but now he has lost the ability for some reason, so he cannot be relyed upon in a shootout at all. I say Australia would have come out with the victory. Juventina: Did you not see Buffon's performance against France during the shootout? How can you believe he would have saved any after seeing him completely fall the wrong way each time, never even coming close? Because one must be blind to think that Buffon is good at saving penalties.

italy would still had a better chance of winning the game..they had a better goalie and definitely better penalty takers..but still it's a 50-50 situation when it comes down to penalties..if luck was on their side that day australia might have won it..but apparently not..

it would've gone into overtime first, which would have given australia the chance to put in a few fresh players (italy had no more subs left). the aussies were also doing well on the defensive side, not letting italy score. so, if they would've kept that up, used their fresh players to their advantage on the offense side, then I think they could've won. if it were to go into penalties, they would most likely lose. but it's over and done with, so it's not like it matters.

It's always a 50-50 thins when it comes to penalty kicks but given Buffon's incredible skill I think Italy would have come out on top.

Yet another good question from Lola.
Sensible question.
I hope this will be the end of Italy-Aus game issue.
Surely Italy would have won the match. They are clearly the better team.
Buffon is a good goalie.

ALLRIGHT,THIS IS A GOOD QUESTION!
BUFFON WAS SUCH A PAIN IN THE NECK IN THIS PAST WORLD CUP.. YOU JUST COULDN'T SCORE AGAINST THE GUY!! REMEMBER ZIDANE'S HEADER IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE OVERTIME IN THE FINAL, THAT BUFFON SAVED? THAT WAS A STUB IN MY HEART! JUDGING FROM THAT AND HIS OTHER SAVES I AM AFRAID THAT THE ODDS ARE ON THE ITALIAN SIDE..
--HOWEVER--
IT WOULDN'T BE CERTAIN THAT THEY WOULD WIN CAUSE THEIR PLAYERS COULD MISS PENALTIES, THE AUSTRALIAN GOLIE COULD HAVE A GREAT DAY AN D IN GENERAL YOU JUST CAN'T PREDICT THESE THINGS!!
THE REFERRE OUGHT AND SHOULD HAVE GIVEN A CHANCE TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN..

This is an easy one...Italy for sure they have the best goalkeeper..BUFFON!!!
Don't get me wrong I like the Aussies!
Hey Lola...just want to show you what a hypocrite Lady_Starlight is...she can't learn to form an opinion and stick to it.
“Italy is great, Germany and England will always be my favorite teams, but I don't hate Italy or anything. I really like Gigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo, and Francesco Totti. You're right, just because Materazzi did what he did, (which wasn't anything racist, it was just something really rude) you can't blame the whole team. Look what good examples players like Buffon and Del Piero and Cannavaro are, and the good sportmanship they have. And when Gigi talked to Zidane after the red card, and said later in an interview that he felt really bad for Zidane, he is so sweet! Gigi is such a kind person. You can't hate a team because Materazzi is there. There will always be morons in the world, you can't let them get to you. As for Cannavaro, so many people think he is hot...he's not ugly, but Gigi is so much better looking! He is amazing and gorgeous! Buffon all the way!!!”
