You should never look down on someone that is down on their luck and needs some extra help. It's not a shameful act to ask for help if you need it, but my question is, what are you doing in the meantime to better your situation? Are you taking classes to get a degree? Are you looking to work for a company that can allow you to climb the ladder so that at some piont you can eliminate your need for assistance?

If not, then yes, I would look down on you. There is no sympathy for those who won't help themselves.

Now, please don't misunderstand me. I know that things can get pretty bad. I've been there myself. But I worked VERY hard to pick myself up and after 9 years at the same company, I've managed to get myself into a great position. I have recently become the Customer Relations & Business Development Manager.

I guess my message is, you should never be looked down upon if you are trying to support your family. But don't do it that way forever. Learn how you can make your life better so that you can raise self confident and independent kids. That way, with any luck, they won't have the hardships that you've had. That is what we hope for our children, isn't it?

Good luck & God bless!

Because it is associated with being on welfare and if you are on welfare you are looked down upon as too lazy to work and get a job plus living off the system when you should be working to support your own way. The two go hand in hand.

Welfare & foodstamps just seem to go together in some people's minds. There could be people that are just down on their luck, between jobs, pregnant, disabled in some way, and so on and they are really in need of foodstamps and state aid, but people look down on them like they are maggots under their feet.

Then there are the people who live off the system on purpose, and use it to benefit their sheer laziness or craftiness in not looking for work like the rest of us.

Alot of people abuse the system, its not really looking down on someone because they are using foodstamps, but most likely dont NEED foodstamps.

I would honestly be ashamed of myself if I had to ask for assistance.

Also, you see these women who use foodstamps, but are carrying the latest designer purses and got the hair and nails all done up, wearing designer clothes, they dont need food stamps, they are just greedy lazy azzes that dont want to have to work.

Because they've never been in a situation where they HAD to use foodstamps. They don't know what it's like to be that poor. They have a tendency to think that whomever is less fortunate than they are inferior, and that makes me mad. I've never even seen a foodstamp before, but just because someone is less fortunate than I, I'm not gonna berate them for something out of their control. That's purely hateful. Put yourself in their shoes! A little empathy never hurt anyone.

I only look down on people who are using their foodstamps to buy food but use their money to by smokes and lottery tickets.

Anybody can be poor. I just don't like helping those who won't help themselves.

I used to work in a grocery store. I remember this young, well-dressed college student came through my line. Not thinking anything of it, I asked-- credit or debit?

He said, foodstamps, actually. "Hey, it's free, might as well... right?"

It pissed me off so much. He COULD afford to be without foodstamps but he didn't. He's taking advantage of a program the rest of us pay for.

Because they believe this means they are poor and we live in a classist society, but really this can happen to almost anyone. For example, there are many elderly people living off social security who get food stamps because for whatever reason they don't have any other source of income, and if you don't plan for your retirement this could be you, because forecasters say that the Boomers retiring now will bankrupt the social security system, so they'll be none left for you when you are their age!

Most people that have food stamps are in better shape than those who don't have them. It must be nice to work under the table and have the government feed your family and send your kids to school.

Nothing against people who really need the food stamps, my family has been there. However, most people take advantage of it and as it was mentioned - they use their money to buy things they don't really need like beer and cigarettes. That's just trashy.

I work at Lowe's and people come in and use their Government aid cards to buy things that I don't really consider to be necessary if you are in a tight spot. This happens every day.

it's the belief that people using food stamps have been on them for a long time. the belief that not only are you getting food stamps, but that you're probably getting subsidized housing and public assistance in the form of cash. the belief that you're going to continue letting our tax dollars, keep you home and not doing anything to better your circumstances.
is this the reality? i hope not. i have no problem with someone needing a helping hand once in awhile. but when it becomes a way of life... that's just wrong.
