The announcement itself was a very simple engraved stationary piece with the parents names and an attached card with the baby's name. The problem is that the baby's name is one of those odd family names that doesn't distinguish a gender. Any suggestions as to figuring it out what "it" is (beyond calling the parents to find out)?

When you call to congratulate the parents, you say, "And how is little _________". Refer to the baby by name and the response will be, "Oh, he/she is wonderful, sleeps through the night, etc."

There, now the riddle is solved, and you can refer to the baby as a he or she thereafter.

Do you have any family member or friends that might now the sex of the baby? I would start there first. If that doesn't work then I think calling to ask how the baby is is a good idea. All you need to say is "How is the new addition?" The parent(s) will respond with "He/She is great" Or you could ask who the baby looks like most. Then the parents will say "He /She has my eyes..."

If you are wondering about a gift...take Pampers Swaddlers Newborn. They are the best new baby diapers ever!!

Good luck!!

Call mutual friends to find out. If they don't know, call the parents. Or, if you prefer, buy a gift that is non gender specific. Was the birth listed in the paper? They usually give the gender.

I'd choose a gender-neutral baby card and gift (books are a good choice, or anything in white or yellow). Congratulate the parents on their new addition and hope that the thank you note clears things up.

I am not really the best one to answer this question since I have 3 girls: Keaton Michelle, Avery Marie, and Ryan Joann. I gave them boy first names, but female middle names. But i did let people know they were girls. I rreally like the first answer, use the baby's name and go from there. GOOD LUCK!!!

I really like the first answer! Very tactful, yet effective at finding out what you need to. Shame on the parents for not making the gender better known!

If you can't tell by the name or the card... is the card pink or blue? You could always bring a generic gift like diapers, pacifiers, bottles that don't have aren't colored for a boy or girl. Also the little bath sets with the hooded towels that are things like bears or rabbits could be okay to.

Is there a distinctive color to the invitation with the name on it? Blue would be a boy and pink would be a girl. Good Luck.

Get an either or present, white, yellow, or green. Blankets, diapers, t shirts, wash cloths, wipes, powder, bibs. These are all good gifts. Good luck!
