Sounds normal to me..I too wish they grew all year but just when you get to eat them any time you want their gone. We plant twice a year, when the first cuke is spotted we plant another bunch in another bed so you get them twice as long.

It sounds like you need to fertilize more. Are you using your finished compost as mulch? You need to do this through the season to reinvigorate the soil. DO NOT fertilize directly with manure, you will cook the roots as it rots.
Also, you may want to check the base of the plant, where it hits the soil. Cucumbers, melons and squash are all prone to root-rot from overwatering. If the base of the stem is mushy, or loose, water less frequently.

hi red I have a tendency to imagine you're killing your plant with kindness. i don't think of you actually opt to water your plant two times an afternoon. The soil might want to be really dry on suitable formerly you water it back. you desire the soil damp yet no longer soggy. too a lot water drives each and each of the oxygen from the soil and flora desire oxygen as a lot as they prefer water. i'm hoping this helps Johnny
