Can someone explain Gibbs phase-rule in detail? i knw what the variables stand for but wat does the result say

my book says about fixed varibles. i don't really understand what "fixed means." definition of phase rule in my book "for multi-phase sustems at equilibrium, the number of independent variables that must be arbitrarily fixed to establish its intensive state is given by the phase-rule" --explain simply pleasseee...thanks!
