Iraq is made up of three groups/denominations of muslims - shi'ites, sunnis and kurds. These groups are opposed to each other because of their beliefs therefore causing conflict in Iraq. The reason why there are 3 denominations of Islam in Iraq is because of the unnatural borders established when Britain decolonised the middle east.

Saddam was Sunni, Sunni Iraqi's are a minority, yet under Saddam they had control of the gov't. Since we gave Iraq the ability to elect leaders, obviously, the Sunni's lost power, and the way muslims deal with issues that tick them off is to blow people up. The reason Shiites didn't try this crap when Saddam was in power was because he would torture & kill entire families/neighborhoods, a VERY effective way to keep the "peace".

Its a religious issue. They have been fighting since Muhammad died. The original leaders of the two sects had a falling out over the meaning of some parts of the Koran. They also both wanted control of the Muslim community (sort of Pope status) and their followers fell to fighting with each other. This created a rift as bad as what happened during the fourth crusade between western Roman Catholics and the Eastern Orthadox Christians when Constantinople was sacked.

The majority of Iraq's muslims are Shiite (60% total population). There is very liitle difference between the ideology of Shiite and Sunni Muslims. However, Saddam Hussein is Sunni and during his reign of power the government was composed of Sunnis who used brutality to oppress the Shiites. The issues are power, control and retaliation.

When you look at a previous answer, and see what their dispute is about, it would be hard to understand why they kill each other, but that's the sort of people they are, not just in Iraq.

the simple reason they fight is coz of different religious beleifs where in the sunni community is at the upper hand as it follows only the HOLY QURAN AND TEACHINGS OF THE HOLY AND LAST PROPHET of ALLAH , whereas the shias are against the non changeable writings in the HOLY QURAN and swear that the LAST PROPHET will come from them

They are tribes that are opposed to each other. They have always hated each other and it's really nothing to do with the UK or the USA invading Iraq.
