Yes. The planets move around the sun through a more or less empty space.

The planets are moving aroung the sun. This motion gives the planet a certain speed. The sun's gravity tries to pull the planets to it. However, the planet's speed as it goes around the sun is just enough to conteract this attractive force.

Think of it this way: You have a weight tied to a rope. If you give the weight a spin around your head, you will notice that it will slowly go up until it is making a circle around you. The weight is moving at a certain speed, and the speed is just enough to counteract the rope's pull on it. The planets move in a similar fashion.

The planets are bound together by gravitaional forces. The entire solar system is part of milkyway which is a larger scale of the first.
