A laptop is more allround and can serve so much more purposes.

A flaw is that in my experience laptops are still not that stable, so it could be that you have a harddisc failure after a few years, while I believe that a portable DVD player would last longer then that. As it is also ligher and may play longer on one battery fill I would go for the portable DVD player.

Both, because sometime is good to have a laptop with you, but is not good to watch DVD on Laptop. Then you do need a DVD player.

I think it depends. If you want to surf the web wirelessly and watch movies go with the laptop. But if you want to just watch movies, go with the portable DVD player. I would personally go with the Portable DVD player.

Depends on what you mainly want to do.
If your main use is to play dvds, go with the portable dvd player.
