The image on the paper you're transmitting (keep in mind you still get the original back) is sent through face down so that's what the transmitter "reads", sends over the phone line as an electrical impulse, and reassembles as readable/viewable print.

Most are face down. But don't trust it. Some are face up. In my experience, it is usually the combination machines that are often face p.
I am not blond and I always have to think "up or down."

Check the machine - there's usually a raised icon that shows what looks like a piece of paper with a corner folded up. If the corner folded up part has lines on it, then insert the page writing side down. If the rest of the icon has writing on it, then insert the paper writing side up.
