I think there are a couple of reasons why the batter would look at the pitcher in this situation.

First, he could be looking at him as a sign of respect, a way to say "You got me that time." It's almost like a tip of the cap to a guy who has beaten you in a one-on-one confrontation.

The batter might also eye the pitcher if he feels that the pitcher's reaction to the strikeout is inappropriate. Many batters, for example, would be offended by a fist pump or similar reaction by a pitcher, just as a pitcher doesn't want to see a slow home run trot by a batter.

No, they are not looking back to see if a pitcher is gloating. The act of looking back is signal to the pitcher that: You may have got me this time buddy, but I got your number now and you WONT get me again. It's almost like a penis measuring contest between men. It's a total guy thing. :o)

That's a very good question. Not many observe the "nuances" and subtleties of the game of baseball as well as you to come up with that question.

Stay with me here...

Baseball is all about hitting, catching, throwing and pitching the ball.
When a batter steps into the batters box, this begins a "battle", a psychological and physical encounter between two opposing forces:

1) the PITCHER...he is trying to throw the ball, either as hard as he can or with as much movement as he can to cause the batter to miss the ball when he swings at it in order to "strike him out".
ok...
2) now you have the BATTER...he is simply trying to hit that ball to send it as far over the outfield wall as he can for a "homerun" OR, to hit that ball to an area on the field where none of the nine fielders (this includes the pitcher) can intercept the ball either by catching it on a fly (automatic out) or by fielding the ball while it's rolling on the ground toward him and then throwing the ball to a base before a baserunner can tag that base.

Now, as the battle between the PITCHER and the BATTER ensues, one or the other will come out the victor. Either the batter will hit the ball as described above, OR, he will have missed the pitches thrown by the pitcher and called out by the ump for three strikes.

When the batter is unsuccessful at making contact, or "hitting" the ball and is subsequently "out", and as he is walking back to his dugout, his emotion is that of one who has just felt defeat...he is upset with himself, he is upset at the PITCHER for having won the battle. Therefore, he looks back at the pitcher, as if to say: "ok, you have won this battle, but I will return to face you again and when I do, at that time I will be the victor...just you wait and see?"

This then is why the batter, on his way back to his dugout, looks back at the pitcher after having struck out at the plate.

"...and, somewhere men are laughing,
and little children shout,
but there is no joy in Mudville --
mighty Casey has struck out."

What would you be thinking as you got struck out? I'd probably be checking out his reaction to my strike out. If hes happy, Id come up to bat next time hoping to hit that fastball right back at him! Anyhow, the pitcher got the best of the batter so...

I think it looks like that but they are really looking to some part of the scoreboard that tells them which pitch or speed they missed or they are watching a quick replay of their at bat. I forget who it was but one player before said that they were looking out at something on the scoreboard.

They are probably so attracted to the pitcher that they can't resist taking a glance. I bet that most baseball players are gay just from what I have seen. I mean they touch each others butts for crying out loud, how gross is that?

They are secretly thinking they want to throw the bat at the pitcher.
