Try booking through www.opentable.com
They usually have a few tables open and more convenient than calling

I believe you have to call 2 months prior to the date you want to book. If you are staying at a hotel in Napa Valley, have the concierge try to book for you---some of the ritzier places will do this. I know it's hard because it's a popular restaurant and they only have about 15 tables.

Anyone can make a reservation, if you call sufficiently in advance. I hear the lead time for French Laundry is about 10-12 weeks these days. Summer wait times are longer because it is tourist season, and September when everyone is up there for the harvest is probably booked about a year in advance. Try for the winter months when things are slower up there, and maybe you can get the wait time down to 6-8 weeks if you are lucky.
