The media people are under tremendous pressure from their corporate side to be firstest and fastest with breaking news, so more and more they rush off to file their "scoops" without adequate verification...so sometimes they get burned. The only way they can actually get punished when their news is proven inaccurate is in public opinion...that's why Dan Rather got hung out to dry.
Legal measures are only appplicable if deliberate falsification or malicious intent can be proven, and that's not easy to do.

If they slander someone they can be punished thru the courts. Otherwise, making news mistakes isn't illegal. But they do get punished by the public. For instance, I could never watch a tv show anymore with Giraldo Rivera as a news reporter. This loses viewers, which ultimately loses advertising money.

The public has a choice to boycott them, so why don't they?

You may be referring to the "doctored photos" by a Reuters reporter in Lebanon.

The Internet is the most prolific in "doctored news".
People pick and choose those which represent their views. Even if it is totally false. Like all the conspiracies. No one even knows "Who" posts them. Some by those with political agendas.

With the powers of software, anything can be falsified. Just copy and paste, as Reuters demostrates.

They're supposed to get punished if they don't go back and make a correction, whether it's in the paper or on the news. I don't know if the rules are different for tabloids.
