My wife was induced 4 times. It is not a bad procedure. They give you an IV containing a drug called pitocin. The Pit is a natrually occuring enzeme in your system that causes labor to start.
Generally when they do an induction they do it early in the morning. At least around the Chicago Area. In any case once the pit is introduced into the system nature takes over. I will warn you the pit is not full proof.
You could deliver on Thursday, It might be the next day. If after 5 hours nothing happens, ie the bag breaks or you dilate and begin labor on your own, then they stop and keep you at the hospital till the next morning when they begin the same procedure again.
My wife had the problem of th ebag breaking beofre contractions started. So they were forced to induce each time. With our oldest she was in labor 8 hours. 22 with daughter 2. ^ with Daughter 2. 9 with son 2.
Labor pains on the pit are harder than natural labor pains according to the doctors. Since my wife didn't have natural labor pains...I realy can't address that issue.
Have fun and good luck.oh and happy birthday to all three of you.

I was induced when my 2nd child was 2 weeks overdue - he's now 8. Thank God my Midwife ordered it - he was 9lbs 4 ounces, I hate to think of how big he would have been if we didn't induce.
As for being induced - I think of it as driving w/ someone else's foot on the gas. It was okay, not any worse than the 1st labor that was normal in all respects, except for his size which made things a little painful....
Don't worry - you'll do fine. Just because you are due on the 20th doesn' t mean the baby will come on that date - this way you are a bit more in controll.

I was induced with my 3rd child and he came very quickly. I have since been induced with 4 and 5 they weren't so quick but I really didn't see anything different other than they are helping to get him or her here a little early. I don't nessecarily think it is a good thing to be induced for the reason of the doctor leaving town, I don't think that they are giving the baby time to come on it's own. In my case 3 was late and 4 and 5 were problem pregancies and the doctor thought best to go ahead and let them try it on their own out of my body. Good luck!! It isn't bad being induced though.

Happy BIrthday first off...and if you don't have to induce then DON"T. It makes the labor worse. I was induced with my second son and ended up with an epidural because I couldn't take the pain...it was so much worse. I talked to other mothers after my experience and got the same answer from everyone, that being induced made it a lot worse.

Being induced isn't really as bad as some make it out to be, especially if you're dilated and effaced. Both those indicate that your body is getting ready for labor. The labor itself won't be all that different than when you had your son.
Make sure you get en epidural. Ask when you go in when you can have one (how far dilated you have to be) and tell them you do want one. There are still some women who don't want them, though heaven knows why.
Since this is your second, it may go faster this time.
Relax, it will be over soon and you'll have a wonderful newborn in your arms.
Give the baby a kiss on the head for me!

That sounds like inducing would be more convenient for him because of his schedule. That doesn't sound right. Is there another doctor that you could go to if yours is out of town? Myself, I went to a group of doctors and if one of them was unavailable, then another was on call for deliveries.
To answer your question, yes, I have been induced, my first one, but only because the baby and I were in danger. My blood pressure was sky-high. The labor was shorter than usual, but a lot more intense. (my second and third were not induced so I could compare). I wish he would not do that to you, though. It's better if you can go into labor naturally, even if it's not your regular doc doing the delivery. Good luck to you and happy birthday!!

I was induced with my first and only child so i don't know if its worse than going into labor naturally but i was induced on Friday morning and didn't have my daughter until Saturday night. It's hard to really tell you what it's going to be like though because it's different for everyone.

I was induced with both of my children because my water broke, but I had no contractions. It wasn't nearly as bad with the second one, I knew what to expect. The contractions do come on faster and harder than with natural labor, but if you have given birth naturally before, I don't think it is as bad. I hope you go before Thursday, but if not, know that you are in capable hands and that it shouldn't be any worse than the first time.

Oh lordy lordy. I just had my son 2 1/2 weeks ago, and was induced. Petosin is HORRIBLE. I was dilated at a 1 1/2, and my contractions were coming every 2 minutes, lasting for 45 seconds-1 minute. But, the good thing is, that it makes it speed it up, so as soooon as you can get the epidural...GET IT! That thing is a flippin life saver! Good luck, and congratulations!~

All four of my children had to be induced. Not to worry!!! Childbirth is always somewhat painful but well worth it. What a joy that you three (you, son, and new baby) can share the same birthday!!! Good luck!!
