I want to write a book but i'm not sure how to get it published for minimal cost. I have been told all my life that i am an excellent writer and i don't want to waste the talent. I don't have alot of money but i do have a lot of ideas. How do i get started?

Forget agents....they only charge for what you can easily do yourself.
Go to this site and read everything about getting published:
www.stephenleather.com
So many people on this site say you have to have an agent. Absolute rubbish!
I'm now into my third novel and have never spoken to one. Just go to small publishing houses to begin with. If you're good you'll get offers from the larger ones eventually.

In answer to your additional details, I suggest that you find Cynthia Laufenberg's "Formatting & Submitting Your Manuscript."
Out of all the replies given thus far, those answers of Amanda's and Chrchrbrt's are on target--although contrasting in advice. Forget about approaching a publishing house unless it is a small, developing one as Chrchrbrt recommends.
On the other hand, a literary agent may be your best approach because you are an unpublished author. You'll have to make the decision which avenue suits you best.
But getting the "Formatting & Submitting Your Manuscript" is my strongest suggestion and one that no would-be-author can dispute.
Good luck.

OH wow, NEVER NEVER NEVER call a publishing company. That would just scream amatuer.
To get published by a major company, you need to get an agent. Most pubs dont take unagented material. Go to www.agentquery.com and start looking for agents-- then scour their websites for advice on what they like, how to write a query letter, etc.
Get the agent first and let the agent get you the deal-- but beware, an agent is just as hard to get as a publishing deal-- but they're worth their weight in gold.
Unless you want to "print" your book through a vanity (IE self-pub) publisher, gettnig published doesn't cost money-- THEY pay YOU.
If you want to print it yourslef and selll copies to your friends, check out lulu.com

Find a publishing company and go to their building. Just put ur story together like in a binder or something like that. Ask for an appointment and give the book to the publisher. He/she will read it and decide if they want you as a client. good luck!

First write the book and then contact a publishing company by calling them (convince them that you are good). Second, search on the web for numbers to call. Third, good luck-- I would like to read it if it's a genre I like.

Forget it. Drop the idea, its not a great career. Do something more professional like using your writing skills at a corporation.

you take out a blank piece of paper and start writing. It is premature to think of publishing when you don't have anything written down.
