The Yamaha has enough horsepower for a small car, and most motorcycle magazines that have reviewed it complain that the throttle action is not smooth - the power comes on suddenly and hard. Sounds like a very good way for a newbie rider to get in trouble. I had a salesman trying to convince me an FZ6 would be a good first bike, but after going home and looking at what reviewers had to say I concluded the salesman was either thinking more of his commission than my safety or just plain clueless.

The GS500F is a lot more beginner friendly. Another bike in this same category would be the Kawasaki Ninja 500.

BTW, have you taken the MSF class yet? I would recommend that class - or a close equivalent - to anyone thinking of getting a motorcycle. You'll have a chance to practice under the eye of an instructor in a parking lot where there's nothing to hit but cones. This will give you a feel for both how the controls work and where your own abilities are at.

well the best advice I can give is, get a bike that you can afford to drop. Truth is there is a good chance that within the first year your going to drop the bike. Last thing you want is a nice bike and to pay to replace all the fearing and muffler etc. The smaller cc rating of the suzuki might give you a littel break on the insurance part. the fact that it's a twin will give you alittle more low end torque. whichever you get make sure you have some frame sliders installed you will thank me later.

if you are trully a greeen rider though go buy a second hand honda rebel and get some seat time before you opt for the faster bike.

The FZ6, DO NOT buy the gs500f, if you are going to get a suzuki get the SV650, DO NOT get the gs500f!!!!!!!!!!!! just don't get it. The sv650 would be my top pick over the yamaha.

I personally don't like Suzuki's. Both me and my husband own Yamaha's. He has an 02' and 06' Yamaha R6, and I have an 06' xt 225. So if i'd have to choose, i'd choose the yamaha.
