i quit everything when i was pregnant, smoking, drinking, even gave up soda and unhealthy food..my friend is now 3 months pregnant and she JUST quit smoking..thankfully thats her only vice she doesnt drink or eat bad etc. but i have been telling her to quit since the test results and im scared that shes already mistreated her unborn. she told me that the dr. told her to stop too but when he realized she didnt he said cut back to 3 a day at the most..well she ended up doing that and quitting but isnt it still very dangerous that she smoked for that long?

Yes, the first 3 months are the most important/crucial months of a baby's life in the womb. Their brain, bones, and muscles are developing very quickly. THough, since it's already been done, all you can do is encourage her to keep doing great the rest of the pregnancy. That counts too!!!

Smoking at any time during the pregnancy can be harmful, both to mom and baby, but your friend should be congratulated on quitting because it's hard to do, and any change no matter how late is excellent.

Many women smoke right up to delivery day and have healthy babies, but it's still true that smoking can and sometimes does harm the baby.

There's no point in worrying about the first 3 months. That is done with and your friend has made a change for the better. And if there was any harm at all, chances are good that it was minimal. What she does from now on will have a positive impact and may even help undo any possible harm at the beginning.

Good for you both for making that sacrifice for your babies! It's tough.

smoking is dangerous for everyone. the smoker, people around the smoke and the fetus inside. theres no way to know what affect the smoking had on the unborn baby. the first 3 months is crucial. also if she is still around other people who smoke, it could still be affecting the baby. or it is possible that the baby will emerge completely fine. but if she really wants to give the baby the best chance possible at perfect health, she should stay away from all smoke first or second hand. you should keep encouraging her to give up unhealthy habits and kudos to you for being a good friend and a good example!

They do stress that it is important to quit prior to getting pregnant. My mother chained smoked while she was pregnant with me and I am a healthy and happy adult with no problems at all either health wise, physically or educationally.

Our neighbor just had a baby 4 month's ago and she also chained smoked, chugged Mountain Dew all day and ate terribly and she also had a very healthy baby boy, he was small when first born but now he is a healthy baby boy with the right amount of baby fat.

Of course it was incredibly dangerous for her to continue smoking. That was selfish and irresponsible, but thankfully she DID eventually quit. Hopefully the worst that will happen will be that the baby will be a little underweight. She's at least made it through the 1st trimester, but of course that is the most critical time for a fetus. Good luck to that little baby!

The best thing is that she quit this early. I know women who smoke up to a pack a day and are eight-nine months. Make sure you support her because if you criticize her it might lead to her smoking again.

of course thats dangerous. does she not care about her child? that is so wrong to be selfish and not quit right away. What was she thinking? They tell you to quit for a reason. And i've never heard a doctor say that maybe she needs to find a new ob

Why worry? There's nothing you can do to change anything that may have already happened. I would be concentrating more on the fact that she actually quit! I know many people who haven't even been able to do that much...
