my grandson and I were mailing "pretend" letters and he asked why the glue was not wet on the envelope, so one thing led to another and we both wondered who invented the mailing envelope and when.....thank you....

I don't think anyone really knows for sure who "invented" the envelope. People have wrapped things for transport for a very long time.

Up until 1840 all envelopes were handmade, each being individually cut to the appropriate shape out of an individual rectangular sheet. In that year George Wilson in the U.K. patented the method of tessellating (tiling) a number of envelope patterns across and down a large sheet, thereby reducing the overall amount of waste produced per envelope when they were cut out. In 1845 Edwin Hill and Warren de la Rue obtained a patent for a steam-driven machine which not only cut out the envelope shapes but creased and folded them as well. (Mechanized gumming had yet to be devised.) The convenience of the sheets ready cut to shape popularized the use of machine-made envelopes and the economic significance of the factories which had produced handmade envelopes gradually diminished.

Happy mailing with your grandson, from one grandparent to another!

I lick it i admire the flavor ... i comprehend its revolting I additionally love stamps as nicely. As for letters it relies upon on what i think of is in it bill - circulate away it for approximately one hundred days kicking it around the floor until eventually the envelope falls off Cheque - rip it off around the precise straight away pulling out the cheque/money and so on some situations if there is not any longer postage date stamp on the envelope i open it heavily so as that i will recycle the stamp ( re use the envelope)
